Revolut packs a punch with new glow-in-the-dark debit card - Finextra

Image
Revolut has launched a glow-in-the-dark debit card in partnership with two-times world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua as part of a programme to raise funds for independent boxing gyms across the UK. For every limited edition Anthony Joshua card ordered, Revolut will donate £1.00 to support federated boxing clubs in England and Scotland, with a minimum £50,000 in funding set aside for the project. Facilities such as gyms and leisure centres were not included in the UK Government's Sport Winter Survival Package that was announced late last year, and sports charity ukactive has estimated that 400 facilities have closed their doors permanently since the beginning of the pandemic and another 2,400 gyms are at risk. Boxing clubs supported by the scheme will have their own unique referral code, and will receive £1 for every card purchased using that code. The gym who refers the most will also receive an additional £10k. The card, which is bran

Exclusive: Hack Breaks Your Visa Card’s Contactless Limit For Big Frauds - Forbes

Image
Think that £30 limit on contactless payments is going to protect you from big thefts? Think again.  Security researchers have found a way to bypass that limit on Visa cards. Their hack, which isn't limited to U.K. cards, could let opportunistic crooks drain accounts with a single tap, and they claim they don't even need to steal the credit card. And little on Visa's side is being done to address this fresh fraud threat. Forbes let the researchers—Leigh-Anne Galloway and Tim Yunusov, from cybersecurity company Positive Technologies—try it out on a personal Visa card. They extracted three successful payments of £31 ($38). On their own cards they made contactless payments as high as £101, though it's possible more could be stolen with just a tap. Their hacks show how contactless fraud could get a lot worse. Typically, if a bank sees multiple £30 contactless payments, the card will cease to work, as fraud detection systems suspect it's in the hands

Why Europe’s banks want to end US dominance in payments - Financial Times

Image
The last time Europe's banks tried to build a payments group capable of taking on the US giants that dominate the sector, they failed miserably. But when Project Monnet collapsed in 2011, nobody was talking about the commercial threat from US tech companies; and the EU's politicians had not just lived through the Trump presidency.  Now, with those politicians convinced that a European payments system is a question of sovereignty, some of the currency area's largest lenders have teamed up to launch a new attack on their dominant US rivals.  It got off to a rocky start last summer when US soft drinks group PepsiCo objected to its proposed name: The Pan-European Payment System Initiative, or, PEPSI.  However, key backers are still optimistic that the idea, now dubbed the European Payments Initiative, can succeed. In 2011 "there was no political support at all", Wolf Kunisch, head of strategy at Paris-based payments processor Worldline, told

Sale of Credit Agricole Romania to Vista Bank slightly delayed - Romania-Insider.com

Image
The Greek shareholders of Vista Bank do not yet have a sale-purchase contract signed with French group Credit Agricole, even if they previously announced an agreement to buy its Romanian subsidiary, according to sources in the banking market familiar with the deal, Economica.net reported. The same sources say that Romania's National Bank (BNR) is waiting for the sale documents to decide what can be approved and what can not. The two sides probably signed only a preliminary agreement and not an actual purchase contract, while the French bank was supposed to announce a decision by the end of last year. By June this year, they will probably reach a detailed agreement on the transaction and have all the documents submitted to the BNR. The representatives of Vista Bank Romania stated that "the process of obtaining the necessary approvals from the authorities for the completion of the acquisition of Credit Agricole Romania by Vista Bank is underway and is carried out following t

My stolen credit card details were used 4,500 miles away. I tried to find out how it happened - ZDNet

Image
On a Thursday back in February I was relaxing and watching TV when my evening was interrupted by the ping of a text message from my bank. "You will shortly receive an SMS to confirm recent activity on your card." I was puzzled. I certainly hadn't made any strange or unexpected purchases that day, so what was this about? About 30 seconds later, I received my answer in a second text message. It said my credit card details had been used less than a minute before to try to make a payment of £108 at a store with an unfamiliar name.  Download this article as a PDF (free registration required). A quick search online revealed it to be a supermarket in the city of Paramaribo, Suriname – a small country on the north-eastern coast of South America, bordered by Brazil, Guyana and French Guiana. That's quite a long way from my home in London, so I
