The director of banking card company Visa, Al Kelly, was forced to apologise today after the "hardware fault" spread across Europe on June 1, saying that the company "fell well short of its goal...to ensure all Visa payments work reliably 24 hours a day, 365 days a year". This week, millions of people - especially in Ireland, the UK and Germany - were forced to use cash only to complete their payments, or abandon their transactions altogether, as Visa cards failed to work for around six hours. Yet, although 40 million people in France have a Visa card of some kind, the country was spared most of the problems. This is due to the Carte Bancaire (CB) system put in place in 1984 by then-Minister for the Economy, Pierre Bérégovoy. This system means that the vast majority of card transactions in France pass through a secure intermediary, the CB group, so French shoppers - even if their cards show the Visa logo - were not reliant on Visa's operating system to pay. It's hard to imagine it could soon go away. But earlier this month, Mastercard announced plans to remove the black magnetic stripe from all of its credit and debit cards. Boca Raton, FL – A group of well experienced Disaster Relief Rotarians have once again come together to organize relief supplies, medical assistance, shelter and other necessary commodities for people in Southern Haiti to survive and rebuild after the August 14 th earthquake.  Haiti is part of Rotary District 7020 which includes 10 countries and 16 islands in the Northern Caribbean. The committee met on Saturday afternoon to lay some groundwork focusing on immediate relief, and to inform those that want to donate how they can do so. Police said Tuesday they charged a man in relation to two bank robberies in Calgary on Monday, with one incident leaving an employee injured. On April 19 at 12:30 p.m., a man disguised with dark sunglasses and a bandana entered the TD Canada Trust at 3630 Brentwood Road N.W., police said. He approached a teller and demanded money, verbally and with a note, while claiming to be armed. Visa and Mastercard have left open key gateways between Binance and the financial system despite rising regulatory scrutiny on the cryptocurrency exchange that has prompted some banks and smaller payments companies to cut ties. Barclays and Santander — two of the biggest UK lenders — have in recent weeks stopped their customers from sending funds to Binance through their payment cards, citing a consumer alert issued last month by the Financial Conduct Authority against Binance. Some other payments partners have also backed away, making it harder for customers to move money to and from the Cayman Islands-incorporated exchange.
